Many people are unaware of the fact that if a product is physically the same size and made from the same material, each unit should be identical in mass and therefore weight.
It is this fact that allows an individual to count such products on a weighing scale. Most of today's light industrial portioning scales and platforms have a basic parts-counting function built into their software. You can also purchase a proper counting scale that is specifically designed for counting applicable products.
The principle is as follows: If a 12mm bolt, for example, weighs around 70g, one can "teach" the counting scale that one bolt weighs this amount. Then, if one places 10 such bolts onto the counting scale, the readout will show 10 pieces. The counting scale has stored the "unit" weight of one bolt into memory and will divide this value with the weight of 10 bolts, the result of which will be the total number of bolts or pieces.
If you take this one step further, you can place an empty box or container onto the scale and press the "TARE" button. This action will deduct the weight of the box from the final result, so if you take an unknown amount of these bolts, place them into your box and then place the box onto the scale, you will see the total number of bolts on the readout. This is brilliant for stock-taking and inventory control in medium to large companies as it saves an enormous amount of timing taken while staff manually count stock items by hand.
The principle can be applied to money as well. Large banking firms as well as cash businesses use "Coin" counting scales which are designed for the sole purpose of counting coins. As you can imagine, it saves time and therefore money to process money this way, as opposed to counting by hand.
